The goal of the CRA-W Workshop on Research Career Mentoring for Women in Computer Science and Engineering (CMW-R/CMW-L) is to provide mentoring activities targeting women senior graduate students and women just starting as industrial researchers or professors. The workshop is structured to provide critical information about the culture of and content required for professional research, and contacts with successful role models and mentors.

The workshop will cover a variety of topics targeted to "junior" academic, industrial, and national laboratory researchers.

For junior academic researchers and graduate students: we will have panels on getting a job and negotiating a start-up package, getting funding, and surviving the tenure process.

For junior industrial and national laboratory researchers: we will have panels on getting started in a research lab, being successful both within one's institution and in one's research community, and planning one's career.

The 2009 CMW workshop will be co-located with the IJCAI-09 conference.

The fee for attending the workshop is $235 if you register early (Early Registration Fees apply until May 15; $265 for late registration). The fee covers the cost of the facilities and meals provided during the workshop. Each participant is responsible for her own travel arrangements and expenses (airfare, local travel, and room costs, etc.)

Selection Criteria for Support to Attend Workshop 

The main criteria that will be used to determine who will be given financial support to attend the workshop are as follows:

1. Applicant's contribution to the workshop's goal of advancing career development for women in academics, specifically related to research.
2. Financial need of applicant.
3. Maximizing the number of participants at the workshop.
4. Applicant has not attended one of these kinds of workshops in the past five years.
5. The applicant is either a student at a U.S. degree-granting institution or an employee of a research laboratory in the U.S.

Financial support will cover expenses, up to a maximum of $1,000, related to

• travel (airfare and ground transportation)
• workshop registration
• hotel accommodations
